Sullivan Double Entry Journal

Quotation from the text Response
1.) “Their research showed that reading for pleasure produces important benefits across a variety of academic disciplines (including math) and that “reading is actually linked to increased cognitive progress over time.” (6).

2.) “Reading, then, can literally help determine the way we are able to think” (8).

3.) “many students see ‘reading’ as simply forcing one’s eyes to ‘touch’ each word on the assigned pages” (11).

4.) “readers often have to adjust their reading strategies for different purposes and contexts.” (13).

1.) I think this quote is important because it gives an actual study to confirm Sullivan’s claim. I personally think that this is helpful because it gives more credence to his argument and makes me believe that reading for pleasure is important to academics.

2.) This is a conclusion that Sullivan draws from a study by Bourdieu and Passeron. I think this is a powerful conclusion that demonstrates how integral reading is to our lives.

3.) While reading this quote I first didn’t understand what the point of including this was. My first reaction was, “well isn’t that what reading is?”. But I think it is getting at the idea that students read to finish not to understand. That they “touch” each word instead of understanding each word.

4.) This is something that I do normally, so it is interesting to find out that this is a good strategy to consciously use when reading difficult texts.
