Learning Outcome 2

Learning Outcome 2

I use sources to serve as almost a map of how I arrived at my claim. For example, in essay 2 I used multiple Gee quotes to explain how his ideas led me to make the claim I argue in my essay. First, I use a quote from Gee that explains what the basic concept of discourse is. Then I use a Fortin quote that sets up the connection I am going to make between the two. Next, I use another Gee quote to add his concept of a gate into my essay and finally, I use a different quote from Gee about gates and how they interact with Discourses to connect his ideas, Fortin’s ideas, gates, and Discourses together. Mostly I use quotes to explain the connections I make so that the reader can follow along with my train of thought. I think the best example of this is my sixth quote where I connect what a judge from Fortin’s article said with Discourses. By making this connection I was able to set myself up to be able to make my main point about how access to Discourse is being denied for these students. I also tried to use a quote in this essay as a naysayer, however, I misinterpreted the quote itself and didn’t really use it as such. Looking at my previous work, especially my first-week writing assignment, I did not use quotes and only paraphrased in it. I think that I developed a way to use quotes when previously I didn’t really understand where I should use them and how.
